Great Grandma Hull

My Great Grandma Helen Jones Hull passed away Friday, November 19th, 2010. She was born August 29, 1914. She lived for 94 years and during that time she had 4 children, 20 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and 58 great great grandchildren. She knew all of the great great grandchildren by name and had a picture book where she kept all of the pictures of the great great grandchildren.I have so many memories with Grandma Hull. She used to live in Provo in a blue house that had a really nice deck in the back yard. We used to have family parties on the back deck when I was younger. She also used to have a bunny trail that went down a hill in her backyard. The bunny trail had fake animals placed strategically through out it.

Grandma had a lot of salt and pepper shakers and other trinket things in her family room. She used to have a glass cow that we were able to use to pour milk out of.

I remember how all of the great grandchildren would stand back to back with Grandma each time we saw her to see if we had grown taller than her yet. It didn't take most of us very long because she was only 5 feet tall, but it was a great accomplishment to grow taller than her. Grandpa Hull, on the other hand, was over 6 feet tall so not many of us outgrew him.

When Grandpa passed away, Grandma moved in with Grandma Norma and she lived there for a lot of years. We were blessed to get to see Grandma Hull even more now because she lived closer.

I remember that Grandma Hull was at all of the family parties that we had. We always got to have her with us at our Christmas parties and Easter parties growing up. Each year we would have a big party with all of my mom's cousins and such. It was a very close extended family that Grandma Hull brought together.

I remember one time when Grandma Hull had hurt her shoulder and was supposed to be doing physical therapy on it. I would go over to her house a few times a week during that time period to help her do it. She used to cheat while she was counting how many reps she would do: "One, two, three, five, six, eight, ten." I would tell her that she counted wrong and she would accuse me a lying.

Grandma was there when I got blessed and when I got baptized. Grandma came to the temple with me when I got my endowments out. Grandma was there when I got married. She has been there for me through all of my most special events.I remember the first time that Grandma Hull met Lydia and Grandma kept running her fingers through Lydia's hair and she couldn't believe how much hair she had. All Grandma wanted to do was sit and hold Lydia. She wouldn't let anyone take her away from her.Earlier this year, Lydia and I were able to go and help watch Grandma Hull while Grandma Norma was at work. Lydia was moving all over the place and wouldn't hold still and Grandma kept saying how busy she was, but even then, all she wanted to do was sit and hold Lydia and Lydia just wanted to play with Grandma. I had to put Lydia on the couch by Grandma so that they both would take naps.Grandma kept trying to share her breakfast with Lydia and she didn't understand that Lydia could only eat certain foods.Grandma had a sense of humor all through her life. She was always joking and always had something witty to say. When Grandma was 89 we were blessed to get to take her to Disneyland and on a cruise with us. Grandma and I shared a room on the cruise ship and it was so much fun to get ready in the morning with her. She always wanted to look her best with her make-up on and her hair done. We had to wake up earlier than everyone else so Grandma would have enough time to get ready. On the last day of the cruise, the cruise director came onto the intercom at about 6:00 announcing which sections were allowed to leave the cruise ship. Grandma Hull was still sleeping and he woke her up, so the rest of the morning as she was getting ready she just yelled at him each time he came over the intercom saying that he was so rude in waking people up that early while they were on vacation.

That same summer, we had a family party at my parent's house and I had saddled up the horses for the cousins to ride. Grandma told me that I was wasting my time saddling the horse because in her day she used to just jump on the horse bareback and go. Grandma, at age 89, insisted that she wanted to ride the horse and wouldn't take no for an answer. In August, we celebrated Grandma Hull's birthday at her son Bill's house in Orem. She turned 94 and said that she was ready to go out water skiing. She was still doing good and had fun sitting and visiting with everyone.Lydia and I were blessed to get to see Grandma one last time a little over a month ago. Justin went out deer hunting with his dad in southern Utah and I was debating if I should go south with him. I ended up going because I knew it would give me a chance to get to see Grandma. She was living with her daughter, Carol. It was a fun visit. We just sat and talked. Grandma talked about how she couldn't go swimming because she had holes in the knees of her swimming suit. We talked about all of Grandma's great great grandchildren and she showed me pictures of most of them. Grandma just wanted Lydia to be by her, but also loved watching Lydia roll around the floor to get from place to place. It was a sweet visit and I am so lucky that I was able to go see her. While I was there, Grandma Hull kept asking about how Grandma Norma was doing and I know that she missed her and was waiting for Grandma Norma to go visit her. Grandma Norma was able to visit Grandma Hull the weekend before she passed away.Grandma's funeral was on Tuesday, November 23. It was such a good service. It was so much fun to listen to all of the memories people had of Grandma and to celebrate her life. I was so blessed to get to know my great grandma as well as I did. We spent a lot of time with her and I am blessed to have her as an example in my life. I know that Grandma is excited to be with home for the holidays and to get to spend the holiday season with Grandpa! We love you Grandma.

Buffalo Hunt Story

So my dad got a once-in-a-lifetime buffalo tag for the Henry Mountains. When he applied he only had 4 points, most people have the max points which is 15 to draw for this hunt, he had 1/2 of a percent chance of drawing out with 4 points.

Henry Mountains

When I first thought of Buffalo hunting, the movie "Dances with Wolves" came to mind. I thought that it would just be flat open prairies and you could drive around and find the Buffalo and pick one out and shoot it, and then drive up and throw it in the back of your truck. Like this..
Well that is far from what hunting the Henry Mountains is like as you can tell from the picture above. They say there are approximately 300 Buffalo and there are 10's of thousands of acres to try to find them, this is a very difficult hunt. The first hunt that was 2 weeks before ours had around a 40 percent success rate.

We headed up to the mountain on Thursday night. About the 3/4 the way up the mountain we had to put chains on the truck because of snow and ice on the dirt road, and keep in mind that we are in a diesel truck with a 19 foot flat bed trailer hauling 4 wheelers. So we kept going pretty good until this...
The snow drift in front of us was too much. This is basically a one lane dirt road with a 1000 foot drop off to the right. So we took the 4 wheelers off and had to slowly back the truck and 19 foot trailer down far enough til we could turn around. We backed up about 1/4 mile, unhooked the trailer and turned the truck around, and turned the trailer around by hand and by pulling it. Eventually we got it turned around and parked off the side of the road enough. We ended up getting to the cabin around 12:30 (my dad has access to one of the very few cabins on the mountain).
The next are pictures of the cabin.

The cabin is 16x24 and has an upstairs. It worked out really well, we started a fire in the wood stove and the cabin blocked the 40 mph constant winds.

On Friday we drove around to locations where my dad had spotted them before and scoped out hill sides. We did not see any Buffalo during the day driving around, but we did see a lot of big bucks. This picture is one of the smaller bucks we saw.
More pictures from Friday.
My dad
Me and my buddy Daniel Taylor (more on him later)

Later on Friday, Dan and I went on a different trail by 4 wheelers to see what was over there. Well we came across a Buffalo, we could tell that it was a bull, but we left so we did not spook it any more. Went back to the cabin and told my dad, we then formulated a plan to go after it first thing in the morning.

Saturday morning we had Dan sit on a hill and scope out the hillside while my dad and I went hiking over the hill. About an hour later Dan told us he found the Buffalo in the scope, he tried guiding us to it but not too long after his walkie talkie died and we were in thick trees. So Dan headed our way and him and I traded spots, he took my dad to the area where he had spotted while I scoped out the hillside. About 45 minutes later I hear a gunshot and then another one a minute later. My dad used a 375 H&H gun, for people who do not know guns it is known as an "elephant gun". I heard my dad on the radio saying that he had gotten a Buffalo. Dan basically guided him right to where the Buffalo was. Dan is a packer for Moose and Bear hunts in Alaska, so he really knows what he is doing. I was so excited that I just headed down the hill to see it.

This picture kind of shows how steep the hill is.

The Buffalo we are guessing was around 4 to 5 years old, so a medium sized Buffalo which still probably weighed between 1300 to 1500 pounds. So it is still a massive animal just not a trophy.

So enough taking pictures and the real work began. With three people cutting and sharpening knives it took about five hours to skin it and to gut it, it was very difficult working on a 45 degree slope.

This is a google earth image of where we shot the Buffalo, approximately where the arrow is. So when we were done working on the Buffalo it was starting to get dark and we had quite a hike to get out of there. So we started hiking and Dan started to pack one of the front quarters which weighed about 80 pounds, and he was able to hike faster than me out of there, and I was not carrying anything. We ended up getting back to the 4 wheelers after my dad and I thought that we were going to die.

All in all I had a really fun time being up in the mountains with my dad and Dan, and being able to be successful on the hunt.

Well that is our Buffalo Hunt story, I know pretty long but this will serve as a journal.

Buffalo Hunt

Justin went buffalo hunting this weekend with his dad. I was hoping that the buffalo hunt would be as successful as the deer hunt was and they would come home empty handed, but it doesn't seem to be the case. They were able to get one. Justin can tell the whole story better so we will update later and post the whole trip, but for now, I thought I would share at least a couple of pictures.

Christmas Tree

We put our Christmas tree up the other day! We didn't put up the rest of our decorations up yet because they are being stored at my mom's house. We usually don't put our tree up this early (actually this is the first year since we have been married that we have put a tree up - we didn't have enough room in our old place). We put the star up first!
Now if only I could get Justin to let me start listening to Christmas music.

We Decided To Adopt

After a lot of thought and careful deliberation we decided that adopting an new addition to our family would be a great idea! At first we didn't think it would be a wise decision, but then we found a 6 month old that seemed to be a perfect fit for us! Her name is Daisy! We had been wanting to get a dog for a while, but were hesitant because we are just renting. Our landlords allow us to have a dog, but we wanted a puppy and were afraid that the puppy would ruin carpet and possibly chew on things. When we found the ad for Daisy we were excited because she was a little older, but still a puppy. Plus, she is already potty trained! Her previous owners had to sell her because they were moving out of their house into an apartment and couldn't keep her. They had a two year old boy so she was used to kids crawling all over her and pulling her ears and such. We thought she would be a great fit for us. When we went and saw her for the first time Lydia was so excited. When Lydia saw her she started squealing and kicking. It was so cute to see.
We got Daisy on Friday night, November 12th, and we have had a lot of fun with her. We have taken her on a few walks and to the park to play a couple of times. It's been a little colder outside so we have to bundle Lydia up pretty good before we go.
Luckily for us, Lydia loves her big, fluffy winter coat. She always starts to clap when I put it on her.Daisy is a really mellow dog. We can tell her to go lay on her bed and she will. It is great. She knows how to sit and we will have fun teaching her more tricks.
Lydia is going to love having her around. Lydia actually tries to crawl over to Daisy and once she reaches her tries to pull her ears and pet her. Lydia gets so exited to see her. It will be fun to have them grow up together!

More Halloween Fun

I decided to take more pictures of Lydia for Halloween. We carved pumpkins on Saturday night. We had a lot of fun. Needless to say, Lydia's pumpkin turned out the best. Justin and I will have to be more creative next year!On Sunday, Halloween, we had Lydia pose for more pictures. She really likes Halloween and being able to play with all of the candy. On Halloween night we went over to my grandparents (all of the trick-or-treaters came on Saturday) house for dinner. Grandpa makes chili every year for Halloween. It is a great tradition. We tried to get a picture of all of the great grandkids together, but it was a little hard. Tayden kept trying to run away and Nathan wasn't feeling well because he had just had surgery two days before. I got this cute one of Cole and Lydia though. Cole is 15 months old, but Lydia almost looks as big as him in the picture.
We couldn't quite get one with my mom and her grandkids either.
All in all we had a fun Halloween!
